[12.16.2015]

TAMPA, Fla. -- Former Speakers of the Florida House of Representatives Will Weatherford, Tom Feeney, H. Lee Moffitt, Ralph Haben and Donald Tucker will be the featured panelists at the University of South Florida’s inaugural Florida Legislative Speakers Forum. Organized by the College of Arts and Sciences, the event will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday,Feb. 9, 2016, at the Old Capitol Museum in Tallahassee, Fla.

The panel discussion, moderated by USF Distinguished University Professor Susan MacManus, will be a unique opportunity to hear from notable former speakers who will share individual experiences during their leadership, as well as discuss issues facing Florida today.

Sponsorship opportunities are available, and all proceeds support the college's public policy internship programs and the minimal costs associated with this event. These internship programs offer USF students with an incredible opportunity to learn first-hand about public policy issues facing Florida and to become involved in the legislative process.

A highly-selective program, the Tallahassee InternshipProgram (TIP) begins with an intensive course on Florida history, issues and politics before students relocate to Tallahassee for the 60-day legislative session, where they intern for an elected official or an organization that is involved with the legislative process. Up to 10 students are selected for the program each year and are awarded a $3,500 scholarship from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Locally, students can participate in the Legislative Internship Program (LIP), where students are matched with federal, state or local elected officials or think-thank/policy agencies. Selected students work nine hours a week and receive a $300 USF Alumni Association Scholarship.
