Black Lives Matter expert Wesley Lowery to speak at USF[Feb. 15, 2018]
TAMPA, Fla. -- Wesley Lowery, The Washington Post's leading reporter on police shootings and Black Lives Matter, is coming to the University of South Florida to speak to students about race, diversity and activism at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 15, 2018, at the Marshall Student Center Oval Theater. This event is part of the College of Arts and Sciences' Frontier Forum lecture series.
Lowery is an on-air contributor for CNN and a Pulitzer Prize winning national correspondent who covers topics from justice and law enforcement to race and the Black Lives Matter movement for The Washington Post. His new book, the New York Times best seller "They Can't Kill Us All", garnered the 2017 Christopher Isherwood prize for autobiographical prose by the Los Angeles Times Book Prizes for its research and life changing experiences like being detained by police while covering the riots regarding the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo.
Having worked as a reporter for both the Los Angeles Times and the Wall Street Journal, as well as a local politics and breaking news reporter for the Boston Globe, Lowery has dedicated his life to reporting news stories that strike at the heart of what he values as essential to keep in political conversation. This hard work has earned him the title of "Emerging Journalist of the Year" by the National Association of Black Journalists. It is thanks to his passion and dedication that garnered him two Pulitzer Prize winning coverage of The Washington Post's "Fatal Force" and The Boston Globe's coverage of the Boston Bombings.
The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 7 p.m.
Presented by USF Phi Beta Kappa Alumni Faculty and sponsored by the USF College of Arts and Sciences and USF Office of the Provost, the Frontier Forum lecture series has hosted several notable speakers including Neil deGrasse Tyson, Michio Kaku, George Takei, Jane Goodall, and Scott Freiman since 2010.
