A short story by Rita Ciresi, professor of English at the University of South Florida, has been selected as a finalist in the International Aesthetica Creative Writing Award that attracted 2,000 entries from more than 40 countries across the world.

USF researchers shine light on “The Politics of Mental Health”
Graduate students and faculty members at the University of South Florida and colleagues tackle tough questions about mental illnesses and add new dimensions to discussions about the “politics” of mental health in a recently published special issue of the Journal of Medicine and the Person.

NIH grant awarded to CMMB professor

Chemistry assistant professor receives his first NIH R01 Award
University of South Florida Assistant Professor Ioannis Gelis has received his first National Institutes of Health R01 award for his research on how certain proteins are involved in disease and cancer.

Physics professor Matthias Batzill to receive Jewell Award
Professor Matthias Batzill of the University of South Florida College of Arts and Sciences has been chosen to receive the Barbara P. and Emery H. Jewell Award for Physics Faculty Excellence, an honor given each year to a Department of Physics faculty member who has been remarkable in the areas of research and teaching.

English professor among Florida Book Award winners
USF’s Dr. Ira Sukrungruang was awarded the Bronze Medal in General Nonfiction in the 2014 Florida Book Awards for his collection of essays, “Southside Buddhist.” See the press release with the full list of this year’s winners.

Physics professor receives award to develop first solid state atomic clock
Denis Karaiskaj, Ph.D. of the University of South Florida Department of Physics has received a $160,428 Phase I award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop the first solid state atomic clock. This proposed work has significant applications based on Dr. Karaiskaj’s patent through USF.

CAS professors named Researchers of the Year
Associate Professors Jennifer Bosson and Joseph Vandello of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Florida were named the Researches of the Year by the Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinity.

Geosciences professor receives grant to study inlet management crucial to coastal living
University of South Florida’s School of Geosciences Professor Ping Wang was awarded a $198,769 grant by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to study inlet management in Pinellas County.

CAS professor awarded Fulbright Fellowship
Valerie J. Harwood, an integrative biology professor from the College of Arts and Sciences, has been awarded a Fulbright fellowship to help develop DNA microarray for water testing in Australia.

CAS thanks faculty and staff for their service
The University of South Florida College of Arts and Sciences hosted a lunch Wednesday, April 9, 2014, to honor its long-term faculty and staff. In total, 112 faculty and staff were recognized for their service.

CAS professor awarded major French civilian honor
Philippe Létrilliart, Consul General of France in Miami, presented University of South Florida College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished University Professor Gaëtan Brulotte with the honor of Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques on March 26. The presentation followed his talk on the topic “Contemporary Relations between France and Florida.”

CAS professor awarded Distinguished Lifetime Award
The Society for Applied Anthropology honored University of South Florida professor Alvin W. Wolfe, Ph.D. for his career and professional contributions. The society honored Wolfe on March 21, 2014, with a Distinguished Lifetime Award, the second award of its kind to be recognized in the association’s 70 years.

CAS professor receives prestigious fellowship
A professor in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Florida received the American Philosophical Association’s Edinburgh Fellowship, which sponsors one visiting research fellowship per year at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh.
