Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania,
in 1955, Axinn taught at Temple University, Philadelphia
for 45 years. Chaired the department for fifteen years,
and retired as Emeritus Professor in 1992. Two years had been spent teaching
Philosophy in Japan. Since then he has been involved with the Philosophy Department
of the University of South Florida, Tampa, currently as Courtesy Professor.
In 1985 he was President of the American Society for Value Inquiry. He has published
over forty articles, and various book reviews. Also three books: A Moral
Military,(used at West Point for a period), The Logic of Hope: Extensions of
Kant ' s View of Religion, and co-edited Autonomy and Community:
Readings in Contemporary Kantian Social Philosophy. He has lectured at
institutions in England, Belgium, Hungary, Germany, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan,
and the USA . Current work is on a second edition of A Moral Military, and
on Sacrifice and Value, an effort to place “sacrifice” at the center of Value
Theory.
