To use the dossier service, students must decide that they are "going
on the market" by mid-October when the first fall issue of Jobs
for Philosophers comes out, and then they need to immediately schedule
an appointment with the Director of Graduate Studies (and the Chair, if available).
If a candidate has not met with the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) by
November 15 (assuming their materials are due by December 1, earlier
if the post marked deadline is before December 1), then they will not be able
to use the Department Dossier Service.
The candidate planning to use the dossier service must bring a Complete Dossier to the meeting with the DGS and the Chair, with the exception of the letters of recommendation which are confidential. After the dossier has been approved, the DGS will give the Graduate Program Assistant the go ahead to send out the dossier; but it will not be sent out without approval by the DGS.
So that the
application deadline can be met for each position, the student must request
2 working weeks
prior to the application deadline that the Graduate
Program Assistant send the approved dossier.
A Complete Dossier Consists of the Following Documents:
From
the Major Professor & Committee Members:
Letters
of Recommendation -- either the hard copy, signed and on letterhead or an
electronic copy that can be produced on demand for your signature.
From
the Candidate, in Electronic Form (Microsoft Word or Wordperfect-- e-mail attachments are
most efficient):
·
CV
·
Dissertation
Abstract
·
Dissertation
Summary
·
Complete List
of Graduate Level Coursework
·
List of References
·
List of Addresses
and Deadlines for Sending the Dossier.
If you have questions about how to produce any
of the above items for the dossier, contact your Major Professor, Martin
Schönfeld, or Roger Ariew.
Please Note: Because the Graduate Program Assistant already supplies teaching evaluation statistics and typed comments to the Teaching Assistants each semester, the Candidate will send teaching evaluations with the application for each position; they will not be included in the dossier. Most likely the Candidate will send them as part of a teaching portfolio.
