This is the first of a two-course sequence, serving as an introduction to the field of biomedical ethics. The course focuses on major ethical issues and theories, as well as the ways in which health care providers, patients and families attempt to deal with the ethical dilemmas of health care today.

The goals of the course are to: (1) become familiar with bioethical theories; (2) develop a knowledge of major bioethical issues as they relate to individual patients (more social or global issues are dealt with in the follow-up course); (3) develop critical thinking skills through the analysis of cases and readings in the text; (4) acquire some in-depth knowledge of a topic of your choice through the preparation of a paper.

Regular attendance is expected. Please note that 25% of the final course grade is based on class discussion. Missed work may be made up, depending upon the circumstances. Students who anticipate the necessity of being absent from a class or scheduled examination for a major religious observance are expected to provide the instructor with notification prior to the event. (See the USF Policy on Religious Observances for the complete policy statement). Plus/minus grades will not be used in this course.
