Office Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:15
- 1:45 in FAO-237 (my office in the Philosophy Department). I am available
much more than those scheduled hours, and would be glad to discuss business
at any time. I am also available before and after class, in the classroom.
Appointments are also welcome. Finally, please do take advantage of the telephone
and e—mail. I check my voicemail and e-mail regularly.
Book: Symbolic Logic, 5th Edition, Irving M. Copi
Requirements: All four examinations. The grade, however,
will be based on the highest three examination scores. If an examination is
missed, it must still be completed even though the grade will not count.
Everyone must take a minimum of three examinations for which the grade counts.
A zero will be assigned for additional missed examinations after one. Clearly,
the best plan is to take all four, allowing the lowest score to drop out.
Objectives: Mathematical treatment of formal logic,
including proofs and methods of proofs, quantification, the logic of relations,
and properties of deductive systems.
Syllabus: The syllabus below is organized by weeks,
indicated by the Monday of each week. We occasionally will move a bit ahead or
fall a bit behind, so that exact dates are not important. The examination dates
will remain fixed, however.
