ETHICS and BUSINESS

PHI 2631 – Summer 2004

Course Objectives:

The purpose of the bi-weekly discussions is to provide additional explanation of ethical and business arguments, perspectives, and roles of various theories and traditions related to business and the professions. The discussions will be active, participatory dialogues requiring your prior assigned reading preparation, case study analysis, and class participation. The goal will be to sustain an understanding of the importance for professional ethics, as both an individual and member of the community.

 

Course Requirements:

  • Case Study panel project: Written analysis 5-7 pages and presentation using RESOLVEDD.

 Format: Your name, course name, and due date must be in the upper right hand corner, single-spaced. The selected case study is your title, centered on the page. You must use the RESOLVEDD method and cite how a particular moral theory applies to your case. Written work must be: on white paper, double-spaced text, Times New Roman black, 12 pt font, 1” margins all the way around, spelling and grammar corrected. Photos, diagrams, or graphics are not permitted. All written work is due at start of class on date assigned.

o       NO emailed papers permitted.

Grading: Letter grade (0 for missing presentation or failure to submit written analysis) – 50%

 

o       Q & A panel: Student led question panels on case studies. (Extra Credit)

 

  • Midterm: Multiple choice questions: Ethical theory and application from text/lecture.

Grading: Letter grade (0 for missing exam / no make-up exam) - 25%

 

  • Final: Multiple choice questions: Ethical theory and application from text/lecture.

Grading:

·        Letter grades will follow the USF grading scale, including pluses and minuses, i.e. A is 4 pts, B is 3 pts, C is 2 pts, D is 1 pt. Your attendance and active participation will factor to round up/down your grade appropriately.

 

·        Plagiarism and academic dishonesty policies of USF are applicable to all papers and exams. I do check internet and online sources. Misrepresented work will receive the appropriate grade sanctions, including FF for the course. USF academic dishonesty policy is found at:

Rules of the Game:

  • Exams, reading, written, and discussion assignments are due on the date assigned, no exceptions and no make-ups except per below.
  • Come to class prepared to talk about the assignments.
  • Absences will not be excused, except in extreme situations (funeral for immediate family member, your serious illness requiring medical intervention, jury duty) with advance email approval plus documentation for absence submitted at next class meeting.
  • If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to obtain assignments and notes from a classmate. Blackboard, through your myUSF account, will allow you to email your classmates as needed.   • Respect your colleague’s personal views, culture, gender, ethnicity, political, and religious convictions. There will be an expectation of the use of appropriate language for the subject matter under discussion.
  • No audio, video, electronic, or technological taping/monitoring of class discussions permitted. If you have a documented medical condition that necessitates special accommodations in class, you must notify me in writing prior to the second discussion meeting.
