Course Description:
To live in the world is to interpret and react to that which
is experienced. Often, our experience
shapes how we view the world and our actions.
Those who live in different places and under different conditions see
the world in different ways, acquire different philosophies. Oppressed people, therefore, have experiences
and develop philosophies that are often different from non-oppressed
people. It is the purpose of this class
to study the writings of oppressed black people in
Class Requirements:
Grading:
Tests: There will be three essay-based tests based on the books and class lecture.
Papers: There will be one 2-page paper. The paper will be written in 12 point, Times New Roman, double-spaced with 1-inch margins or they will not be graded. There will also be in-class writing assignments.
Pop quizzes: A pop quiz will be given each time a cell phone rings in class. If the instructor’s cell phone rings, extra credit will be given to the class.
Class participation: Students are expected to engage in any discussion that may take place in class.
Grade Calculation:
Your grade will be calculated by the division of the total number of points you get by the total number of possible points for the class.
Missed assignments:
For each class day after a due date is missed, the late assignment will be docked 10 points. Thus, if a student turns in a paper the class day after the due date, the maximum possible grade for that paper is 90. This does not apply for a missed test only if the student provides an excuse for the absence. The student must contact the instructor and schedule a retest.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism will not be tolerated. The minimum punishment for plagiarism or cheating is an F grade on the test or paper.
The instructor reserves the right to change any of the preceding or following with advanced notice.
