Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement
(formerly the Journal of Public Service and Outreach)
http://www.servicelearning.org/library/journals/nslc_journal/index.html
The Service-Learning Review is a NEW, peer-reviewed journal that provides a forum for the publication of manuscripts reporting on evidence-based studies, policy analyses, and replicated practices. This is an annual publication prepared by the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse on behalf of the Corporation for National and Community Service's Learn and Serve America program. The goal is to build quality in service-learning programs, document impacts on students and communities, assess effectiveness, and establish best practices by highlighting articles that go beyond program description.
Academic Exchange Quarterly
http://rapidintellect.com/AEQweb/ontsle.htm
Academic Exchange Quarterly is planning a service-learning edition. The submission deadline is November 30. A diverse body of quantitative and qualitative research suggests that service-learning is correlated with what many of its proponents wish to propagate: civic values, pro-social attitudes, and character development. Some research and speculation, however, suggests that this potentially powerful pedagogical tool can, paradoxically, even discourage students' civic proclivities when used carelessly. As policy-makers continue to require service-learning or mandatory service in schools and universities, it is essential that practitioners better understand and recognize what constitutes quality programming. In the broad and diverse set of efforts that are labeled as service-learning, what works and what does not? How well does one day of service work, as compared to a continuous partnership? Does co-curricular service-learning, with stated developmental outcomes, influence students' development to the same extent that academic service-learning does? How, if at all, does service performed in a community distant from the students' own community affect perceptions and outcomes? In school districts where service or service-learning is now a mandate, how well is it being implemented? What are the best programs to train teachers to implement service-learning? Researchers, professors, administrators, teachers, and students who have dealt with any aspect of service-learning mentioned above are encouraged to submit articles.
