I recently started
working as a social worker for the
International Institute of Akron, OH. I work
mostly with refugees but immigrants as well.
I assist with all types of issues, such as
counseling, court advocacy, requests for
translation services, and lots and lots of
networking. Here is a link to our website
(although Io not believe my position has yet
been updated- I m the only social worker
here!).

Judith
Curts, WST, BA |
|
I graduated
with a BA in Women's Studies in 1991 and
received my MSW in 1994. I worked at
Charter Hospital for my internship and did
therapy groups and developed a women's
program, while initiating my private
practice. My practice has been my passion
and it has been steady, fulfilling and feeds
me well. I recently received my doctorate
(Ph.D.) from Maimonides University in
clinical sexology. It has a joint program
with the American Academy of Clinical
Sexologists. I'm board certified and
practice psychotherapy and sex therapy.
I've also been honored to speak with various
groups in the community on sexuality,
following Dr. Beverly Whipple's model of
female sexual response--quite different from
Masters and Johnson! |
|
My
dissertation was a Qualitative Study of
Female Baby Boomers and Sexuality--actually
following the Hite Report. I am an
occasional guest on Channel 10's morning
show, the Kathy Fountain Show, and the
"resident sexologist" for the Jack Harris
Show on WFLA radio. My practice is on Davis
Islands and I am living in South Tampa. My
kids are grown and thriving. I am happy,
peaceful and centered. Life is good! |

For about a
month and a half [after graduate], I was
driving cross country to visit family,
friends, and see a bit of the U.S. scenery.
At the end of the trip, I landed with family
in the Finger Lakes region of NY and just
this past week took an election period
job with the Working Families Party (a third
party in NY). I am basically canvassing
door to door to register voters, disseminate
information, and most importantly, get Bush
out! I am continuing to seek full time work
in organizing, education/outreach, and/or
research in relation to issues of social
justice -- particularly those issues that
are most relevant to women. |

I'm 45 and a Texan. I got my bachelor's of
journalism (yes, it's actually a B.J.)
degree from the University of Missouri. I
worked for more than 18 years at newspapers
in Little Rock, New Orleans and Tampa as a
reporter and editor. I got my M.A. in
women's studies in December 2001. I then
returned to Texas to help care for my
father, who had Alzheimer's. I was diagnosed
with vaginal leiomyosarcoma in July 2002.
The cancer has spread to my lungs, and I'm
considered incurable. My father died
Thursday (8/5). In early September, I intend
to move back to Tampa, where I have the best
support system, a clinical way to say
"friends." My friend Rosemary Armao,
former executive director |
 |
|
of Investigative Reporters and Editors and a
vice president of JAWS, has said that
I've gone from being outrageous to
courageous. Or, as I joke: Except for the
suffering and early death, I've found
cancer a fascinating experience. While
getting a blood transfusion, for example, I
explained my take on feminism to a nurse who
saw me reading
The Women's
Review of Books. A year ago, I
was in a hot springs in Canada discussing
discrimination against Muslims with a woman
from the ACLU. I went to this spring's march
on Washington with a man who later wore
his "This Is What a Feminist Looks Like"
T-shirt to work. I look forward to more
adventures in Tampa.
Reincarnation
In a complex world,
people see simply.
My identity has changed
as I’ve changed jobs, lovers,
clothes.
I
become someone else
by taking off my glasses.
Now I’m a cancer patient,
the rest surgically removed.

Attends Union
Seminary and writes that "seminary is
fantastic... learning so many new things and
questioning everything I thought I had
already learned. Union is a great place to
put all the education I gained in WST to
work... the professors here are amazing...
We had Delores Williams before she retired.
She wrote Sisters in the Wilderness... a
truly life altering book. And another really
great prof is emily townes... don't think i
quite have the words to explain how awesome
she is. I graduate in 2 years with my M.Div
and will b eordained a Deacon in the
Episcopal Church a month or two after that.
|
 |
|
Then, in
December or January after that, I will be
ordained a Priest. Then I will start looking
into phD programs where I can combine my
undergraduate and graduate degrees... I'm
looking at Claremont Graduate College. But I
still have a few years before I really need
to worry about that. Need to gain some
concrete experience before moving ahead.
It's a great experience...grad school. I'm
part of the Feminist Caucus here and last
April, we took part in the March on
Washington." |
