General Course description:

 

Practical approach to libraries as organizations; administrative principles, theories, and problems in all types of libraries; methods of administration; use role-plays and in-basket exercise.

 

Course objectives:

 

1.      To understand principles of management, administration, and leadership.

2.      To discover the student’s personal management style based on the semester’s study.

3.      To understand the role of management in planning, organizing, human resources, directing, coordinating and evolving.

4.      To identify the management of the library's relations with the outside community.

5.      To analyze managerial problems, particularly as they relate to people issues.

 

Required textbook:

 

Stueart and Moran. Library and Information Center Management.  6th edition. 2002

 

Course Requirements

 

Students are expected to prepare for each class by completing assignments. Class Participation points are correlated with evidence of reading the textbook, lecture notes, supplemental readings and communication with the professor and the student colleagues. Student work will be independent unless assigned as a group project.  Penalty assessed on late work. Student will be expected to join ALIS. Students will also be expected to use the APA or Chicago publication Style Manual for the writing assignments.

Policies

Attendance Policy

Students have the responsibility of observing the class schedule and keeping up with all readings, lectures, assignments and discussions. Students are expected to arrive to class at the scheduled hour. Repeated absences will be reflected in the class Participation grade.

 

Incomplete Grade Policy

For this course, a final grade of incomplete (I) will be awarded only if no more than 20% of the student's work is incomplete, and only if the student is otherwise earning a passing grade. If more than 20% remains to be completed, an F will be given and this grade can be changed when work is complete.

Students are not permitted to use the contents of this course for any purpose than for this class. Tapes or notes from class may be shared between student colleagues in the class but may not be sold or shared beyond the class without the professor’s permission.

 

Religious Preference Absence Policy

Students who anticipate the necessity of being absent from class due to the observation of a major religious observance please provide notice of the date(s) by the second class meeting.

 

Disability

Any student with a disability is encouraged to meet with me privately during the

first week of class to discuss accommodations. Each student must bring a current Memorandum of Accommodations from the Office of Student Disability Services that is prerequisite for receiving accommodations.  Accommodated examinations through the Office of Student Disability Services require two weeks notice.
